smiling kid hugging dogDr. Marisa De Lisle is a second-generation chiropractor and has been under chiropractic care since the day she was born. She and her husband, Dr. Jason Penaluna, have a beautiful daughter named Olivia. Not only was Dr. De Lisle under chiropractic care throughout her entire pregnancy, Olivia was adjusted during the first few hours of her life. She is checked for the presence of stress in her nervous system on a regular basis. When stress is apparent a very gentle adjustment is performed to remove that stress. This allows her body to have the greatest ability to adapt to her environment, keeping her healthy. Olivia is not cared for because of a symptom; she is cared for to keep her body functioning well.

An adjustment given to a child does not produce a “popping” noise. A chiropractor trained in pediatric adjusting uses very gentle pressure to remove stress from the body. This pressure can be compared to the amount of pressure it takes to dimple the skin of a fresh tomato.

There is an old saying, as the twig is bent, so grows the tree. In the first 2 years of life the nervous system doubles in size. On average a child falls over 700 times before the age of two. Because a growing body is exposed to many stresses, it is important to be sure the nervous system is able to adapt to its environment.

Gentle chiropractic adjustments afford a growing body just that: the opportunity to adapt to the physical, chemical and emotional stress that we are constantly exposed to.

The frequency that a child needs to be checked varies on the overall health of the child. In general, it is a good idea to have a child checked at each milestone; learning to sit up, crawl or walk. It is also a good idea to check your child if your child is congested due to a cold or is experiencing a fever. Many people have their children checked on a regular basis to insure that they are growing and developing well.
